If you want to sell your house quickly, one real estate expert says you should paint your front door, drum roll please, …
Blue!
“Over the years, we have spotted a pattern where homes with navy blue front doors tend to attract more attention and sell faster than comparable properties with different colors,” Terry Fisher from We Buy Any Home told Wales Online. “It’s remarkable how a seemingly small detail can have such a significant impact on buyer perception.”
According to Fisher, “first impressions are everything” when it comes to property—and the color of your front door can significantly impact a potential buyer‘s perception of your home.
He says navy blue is a good choice because it exudes a sense of stability and isn’t flashy.
“Blue has universal appeal,” says Jennie Berger, owner and design consultant of Property People in Chicago. “It’s associated with trustworthiness—think banks and police uniforms. It signals a safe and reliable investment.”
Offers that are out of the blue
The feeling that the color blue evokes can help lead to an offer.
“I have sold multiple homes with blue doors in my career,” says Cara Ameer, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker in Los Angeles, CA. “While the color was not specifically called out by the buyer, it probably helped with the overall aesthetic and look of the home, which made it enticing to them.”
Red used to be the go-to color several years ago for front doors, but now “blue is having a moment and navy is a classic,” according to Paige Elliott, of the Elliott and Elliott Group in Dallas, TX. “A fresh coat of paint on the door is one way to increase curb appeal that’s also affordable.”
Blue is a color that Teresa Boyd and Helena Finkelstein, co-owners of Olive Hill Design Company in Verona, NJ, use in nearly all of their designs due to its popularity and versatility.
“A blue door will not feel overwhelming to buyers as they walk up to a home,” they say. “It can calm the buyer, while still adding a spark of personality, and won’t feel too intense like red or yellow might. It demonstrates an understanding of current trends, and could draw in more potential buyers resulting in a quick sale.”
More true-blue fans
The color blue is certainly gaining popularity.
Realtor.com® recently launched “Renovation Designer,” an AI design tool powered by Hover that generates a realistic image of your home’s exterior with new paint colors and materials.
Six of the top 20 paint colors our readers selected for their front doors in the last six months were shades of blue, including Benjamin Moore’s Philipsburg Blue and Blue Nova.
(To try this tool out for yourself, you can navigate to the My Home section of Realtor.com, claim your home, then click on the Renovations tab and upload a photo of your house’s exterior.)
But no matter what shade of blue your door is, it “cannot make up for dirty interiors or other eyesores,” according to broker Samantha Sousa of Visalia, CA—so make sure the rest of the house measures up to insure a swift sale.
